I think many game show contestants are chosen for their emotional volatility rather than their problem-solving skills. I can think of many a time when I was home sick from grade school, and the Jeopardy contestants (this was the original Jeopardy, with Art Fleming) missed some of the most basic questions...
Or, in the vernacular of a popular primetime game show, "I am not smarter than a fifth grader". (Note that the real fifth-graders on that program do not appear to be geniuses or answering honors-level questions.)
