Tuesday Trouble

As most nights for me, last night was a busy one. Each Tuesday we have band practice at church and since I am the leader, I get there early to pull the music and get everything ready.

When I got home from work my wife was in bed sick with Strep throat, my kids were finishing up homework and my sister was there. I sister wanted to take my son shopping for the toiletries he needs for his trip on Friday and she wanted to buy them for him. After fixing dinner for the kids I was ready to leave for church and my son says, “Dad when you get home I need to talk to you.”

“Are you sure you want to wait?” I asked. I do not like to put something important on the back burner.

“Yeah, I don’t want to talk about it now.” He said this in a low tone so I figured it was something embarrassing. I agreed and headed out.

After a great practice I came home ready to check emails and upload the podcast we recorded Monday night. My son was just about to go to bed and comes over to my desk.

“I need you to sign these dad, and maybe you can take me early to school tomorrow?” He wouldn’t even look at me.

He handed me 2 green detention slips from two different teachers. One said that he was caught chewing gum for the 4th time and the other said he was to have two days detention because of inappropriate language.

“What the heck is this George? You wait until bed time to give me these? What kind of language were you using? All this before you leave for your trip! I am really disappointed. And it makes me really angry that you wait until almost bed time to spring this on me!”

He answered in a quiet tone. “I thought I should wait until today since it’s April Fools day.” He paused and looked at me with a snicker.

“You little brat! That was awesome! Man, you got me good! I am very impressed.”

“I asked my teachers if they would help me and they were so cool about it!” He was very happy that his trick worked.

I gave him a hug and a kiss and sent him off to bed.

What a clever little bugger.
Before I had gotten to the last part, I thought, "OMG, has young George fallen in with the wrong crowd - does he belong to a youth gang or something? tsk tsk........"

That was one of the best April Fool jokes in a long time.

He must be a really great kid to get his teachers to agree to go along with this. He's brilliant to come with this trick. What a funny kid!

Oh, hope your wife's strep throat goes away quickly.
