Cast in Stone

Yesterday I had an appointment with my Podiatrist to pick up my orthopedic inserts for my shoes.
Having to need inserts like these were something that would have depressed me before but I see them as a preemptive strike against diabetes and it's desire to take my feet from me.
You see there is a bone in the bottom of my feet that is sticking out a little on the bottom. I am not sure what the technical term is. I considered googling it but I get so upset seeing picture of amputations and foot problems that I would rather stick to my bad description than see something I cannot un-see.
Anyhow, this bone causes my 4th toe to sort of stick up a little more than the rest and it can be painful. The Podiatrist said that these orthopedic inserts should help the problem.
"So what happens if it doesn't? What problem does it cause?"
He explained that the pressure can damage capillaries and cause bleeding which can lead to infection.
FOOT INFECTION = DIABETES RED FLAG!
Foot infection is nothing to mess around with since it can progress quickly and is the reason so many diabetics lose toes and feet. I cannot write any more about that.
"So if the inserts do work, what do we do to make sure I don't lose my feet?"
He said I would need surgery to elongate the tendon so that 4th toe would drop down where it belongs and ultimately making sure the bone is where it's supposed to be.
Awesome.
I am willing to be cut open, taken apart, put back together, whatever needs to happen so long as I am fixed. Surgery doesn't bother me. What bothers me is not doing all that I can to fix things so knowing there is another step that will work if all else fails makes me feel a lot better.
They also let me take home the cool casts they made of my feet for the creation of the inserts. I feel like a local Sashquach or something since my feet are freakishly large.
Anyhow, we are going to give it a month and see what the inserts do. I feel better about it now that I know the plan.

Good job making a pre-emptive strike, Ninj. Controlled diabetes and foot care are NOT the causes of amputations. Uncontrolled diabetes and foot neglect are. I think the insert will work so well that next #bigbluetest video you will be the one doing ballet leaps!
I coudln't help but laugh at the "freakishly" comment. All I can think of is the midget Glee choreographer Dakota Stanley looking up at Finn and saying "And I can't help that YOU'RE freakishly TALL"! LOL
It can be scary to get things checked out - but I'm so proud of you that you did. And now you have a plan and a backup plan!! Rock on, Ninja!
Glad you are getting your feet looked after. Endo took a look at my son's feet and how they kind of roll in...bone sticking out...and said that he most like will need to get it corrected. I am in hopes you are going to share some really positive information to make this momma feel good.
I like that attitude! Get er done! A guys gotta do what a guys gotta do to keep things in working order! Best of luck to you. I hope the inserts work. :)
I'm glad you're doing what you need to do brother.
I can't really tell from the picture, but with your size 14 boats, those casts must be HUGE!!! LOL!
