There is Beauty Here

It must have been ten years ago when I first heard Rachel Kurtz. I was a youth minister at our church and attended a Youth Leader convention in Houston Texas. Rachel Kurtz was one of the musicians that played during worship. She is a singer/songwriter with a voice that some compare to Adele. I would compare Adele to her but that is just me.
Her music is folky, heartfelt, moving, and her voice is amazing. Rich and powerful and yet at times so mild and caring. She really is fantastic and her album “There is Beauty Here” that I bought at that convention is on every one of my favorite playlists.
Needless to say my kids are familiar with her music and truly like it a lot. So when we found out that she was going to be performing at a church not too far away we made sure we were going to be there.
Rachel mostly performs in and around her home state of Minnesota so a performance out west was a treat for us.
Both George and Gillian volunteered to help set up stuff for the night like snacks and flyers and things. Getting to the church so early allowed them a chance to meet Rachel and a hip hop artist called Agape.
Apparently George told Rachel that he grew up listening to her music and loved to play some of her songs on guitar. She grabbed her guitar, handed it to George, and had him play a song of hers. She sang the verses and George sang the chorus while she danced around his notes with a beautiful harmony. He said it was amazing. I wish I could have been there.
By the time Jasmine and I got to the church they were just about to go on. After a few songs Rachel wanted to do a song but wanted people to come up on stage to do hand motions and stuff.
“I want my new friend George and his whole family to come up on the stage!”
George and Gillian ran up next to Rachel and Jasmine and I strolled up slowly behind my broken toe.
As soon as the song was finished we went to sit down and she told George not to go anywhere.
She handed him her guitar and she sang one of her songs. One of my favorites.
Before she started she said lots of great things about George and Gillian. She even told the other churches that were there to contact George if they ever want a band or singer to come and do special music. She said, “We need to get him work and get his name out there!”
It was nothing George asked her to do or that he expected. He was excited, honored, and so very thankful.
After the show we all got to take a picture with her and spent a long while talking. She asked George to learn a couple of her songs so he can join her on stage at the upcoming Youth Convention in New Orleans. So far there are 30,000 kids attending! And sign ups are still open so that number will grow.
I would have never thought back in Houston that this singer I first saw and instantly loved would one day ask my son to come on stage and play guitar with her.
Such an awesome night!
