Salsa

Last week was a weird one for me. I saw my son graduate high school and my daughter graduate junior high.

Time is flying by.

Being a parent has been my identity and focus for so many years. My wife and I sacrifice a lot for them and out of the joy in our hearts. But the fact is, soon it going to be just us and then what?

I mean, we used to go out and have fun but really over the past several years our going out is usually to performance of our of kids or a school event. Not a bad thing at all but that was what our social life kind of consisted of.

So we thought we should probably find some things to do just for us. Like a hobby or something that the two of us can focus on.

Without further ado I am proud to announce that my wife and I signed up for Salsa dance class at our city community center and our first class is tonight.

I don't eat salsa and I have never danced it either but I am willing to try. Whenever I see older couples getting their dance on I get so inspired. I want to be that old guy with the smooth moves while my wife gets to make all the other ladies jealous that their man has two left feet.

Well, it may not be that great but I know if we are doing it together it will be fun. Not to mention the benefit of exercise!

As a parent you should focus on your kids. But the fact is that your relationship with your spouse is just as important and when the kids are off doing their own thing and you are left with someone you really having had all to yourself in 20 something years it can be difficult. Better to start now and get a plan for the future.

A plan to have fun together, exercise together, laugh together, and just be together.

Now where to find a ruffle shirt and maracas?

How fun! ,y husband and I took ballroom/swing lessons pre-kids and really enjoyed it. These days I see ads for lessons and think to myself, "one day". Hope you and your wife have a blast. Don't forget to post a video showing off your moves!

This is an excellent idea!! I know what you mean about your life revolving around your kid's activities, having raised 4 of my own. I love my empty nest but it is an adjustment. Now, I have grandsons who claim my attention. It all works out in the end. :) Have fun at your salsa lessons! I think that sounds like a blast.

I took ballroom dance in college & the ONLY dance I remember anything about is salsa. Probably cause it was the one I loved the most. I bet the two of you will have fun. And get lots of laughs in too. :)

Joanne - Video will probably be WAY down the line!

Kate - Thanks. It should be a lot of fun!

Cara - I hope to take more classes later on. I figure what better way to get your feet wet than in salsa. Eww, that visual just grossed me out.

Congrats!

I'm a young guy (unmarried, no kids), but 100% agree that a healthy relationship with your significant other is super important. The relationship should be able to stand on its own before (in my case) or after (yours) having children.

Salsa - Yay! I haven't done much of that lately, but it is fun! My daughter also graduated HS this past week. We have one 10 years behind, so we won't be on our own for awhile, but the stolen moments or evenings we spend as just a couple have been so critical. I mean, you don't want to be strangers when you are left alone again, right? Great for you - I hope you love salsa!

This is great, George! It will be so much fun! We did ballroom dancing a number of years ago. Started out as "training" to learn for our wedding, but then we went back and did refresher sessions a year or two after we were married. It takes your mind away from life stresses, allows some awesome fun quality time together, and it also does wonders for the BGs! Plus, you get to learn something awesome to be a star on the dance floor!!! Hope the first session went great, and can't wait to hear more about it.
