What a Surprise!
Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 10:43AM Back in October, my son George entered a contest through his school.
The Reflections program, as it's called, was started by Mary Lou Anderson who wanted a way for kids to express themselves through art.
Students submit artwork to their local PTAs. Works are judged at the local level and the winning entries advance to the council, district, region, and/or state PTA levels, depending on the state structure. Top state award–winning entries advance to the national level of judging.
George submitted an original song he wrote called "See the Beauty Inside." The theme of this years contest is "Beauty is..." 
The song he wrote, he had to record by himself. No help from parents which bummed me out. He played guitar, bass, drums, and sang. I was very impressed.
Anyhow, we got a call on Wednesday that he had won an award at school. We went out of town for the holiday so he missed Wednesday. When we got to our family's home my wife called the school and found out that George one first place for his division in our school district.

For what it's worth, his school disctrict has 6 high schools in it so this is no small feat. Now he moves on to regional judging, then state, then national. We shall see how it goes. But no matter what happens we are already so proud of him.
I was proud of him when he decided to enter. That takes guts and confidence, and some self esteem. I am thankful that he has all of those and is still humble.

This is fantastic! I'm so happy for your son, what an accomplishment. It certainly is difficult to enter a contest like this, especially with something as personal as a song. Perhaps you have the makings of an American Idol on your hands?! hmmmmm?
