A Smashing Meetup!

Sitting down with a friend you haven’t seen in a while is awesome.

As soon as you start talking, even though you have been apart for a while, you feel right in step with each other. Laughing about stuff and discussing serious topics all the while laughing and enjoying the time you share. Time seems to fly by and before you know it, it is time to say goodbye. Bummed that your time hanging out together was over but excited to hopefully meet up again soon when schedules permit.

That is what a D-meet up is like. At least it has been for me. For all of the meet ups I have been fortunate enough to have and Wednesday night was no different.

I met with Ashley. An uber funny, rocking type 1 who blogs at Random Ramblings and who tweets as @smashleeca. I can tell you first hand that she is smart, funny, and down to earth.

We started off talking about forgetting to wear Green for St. Patty’s day but she was lucky enough to have a new pump in Kermit color. We discussed differences in pumps, similarities in pretty much everything else, the problem with D-education, and how awesome Red Robin cheese sticks are. ;)

The other cool part is that although we are connected by diabetes, we also had so much more to talk about. That was nice too. I am a pretty open guy about my life and willing to share whatever to whomever. Sometimes I worry about that but almost as soon as I think it I know I cannot change. I am just that way.

Ashley was also very comfortable talking about her life and that was nice.

So after many Iced Tea’s and even more Diet Coke’s we said our goodbyes and went on our way. For almost two hours I got to hang out with another person with diabetes I have met through the OC and just like every time before, I had a fantastic time!

This community is so important to me, to Ashley, and to so many others. If you get a chance to meet one of many in the trenches who go through all the stuff you do, then I encourage you to do it. It has honestly changed my life.

So if you are ever in Southern California, let me know!

Nicely said, George! Sounds like it was indeed a SMASH... Ok. That fell flat. Completely. Anyhow, glad you had another chance to meet with a DCer. Looking forward to the chance someday. In the meantime, keep living it up like a Ninja. I'll do my best from Indy (where we now have 4 members of the DOC, and a posisble meetup coming in early April!). Here's to that, and everyone else who makes this online universe the place it is.
