Sharing the Benefit

On Tuesday night I attended a meeting regarding the upcoming JDRF Promise to Remember Me campaign.

The purpose of the campaign is to have people set up meetings with their congressmen to discuss life with type 1 diabetes. Putting a face to the disease is a powerful way to get these congressmen to consider their constituents when diabetes comes up.

I actually volunteered to make an appointment with the congressman for our district. I am sure that will be a blog post in the future.

The meeting was hosted by Jeanne who blogs over at http://t1advocategma.wordpress.com/ and was held at her home. She did a great job feeding all the 25 (I am not sure on the exact count) people there and explaining to us what the Promise to Remember Me campaign is all about. It was awesome.

After she was done she had invited me to talk about social media and the benefits of it to someone with type 1 diabetes.

It was a great opportunity to introduce the DOC and talk about the benefits of having support all day and all night from people who completely understand.

I even shared some slides to help illustrate the goodness of the DOC.

After the talk I took some questions from the group. It is amazing to think that social media was the reason I was there at Jeanne’s home. She got started blogging because she met several bloggers in DC and I believe Scott was the one who told her about me since we lived close to one another. Than I realized that I had taken a picture of Jeanne’s car a year ago and tweeted it before I knew who she was! The Internet really makes the world a smaller place.

One gentleman asked me for 5 sites to check out. I gave him my recommendations and Jeanne said, “And Ninjabetic.com!” One guest said, “wait a minute, are you Ninjabetic?”

It turns out that her daughter just got back from camp and she said she saw a kid with a “Team Ninjabetic” shirt on! She quickly grabbed her camera to see if he she got a picture of the boy wearing the shirt. It turns out Drew who came to the walk and who is one of the many faces of the “Not By Choice” video was at camp rocking the Team Ninjabetic shirt! SO AWESOME!

I met some great people and am looking forward to doing more with the chapter in the future.

It was a great night!

George, I'm so glad you had this opportunity. I know you knocked it outta the park (you are *really* good at this stuff).

I smiled at the thought of someone knowing of you because of the awesome Ninjabetic t-shirts (and the awesome Ninjabetic behind the whole thing!).

Jeanne - thanks for getting George in front of people! It's his calling!

dude, it's amazing how things seem to come together sometimes, right? from the car sighting a year before you met jeanne to the kid rocking the ninjabetic shirt at camp, it really does seem like the world shrinks down to thisbig. love this post!

I love love love to hear about all of this!!! In fact, I'm going to ask about doing meetings similar to this for our JDRF chapter. Although we are getting our Adult Outreach group going, it seems the rest of the chapter doesn't even know about it - and doesn't seem to do anything for support or advocacy other than events for children or events for fundraising. Thank you for inspiring me to try and change that!
